Experts: vast potential for image processing, computer vision

 ‘They have almost become fundamental to data acquisition'

     VIJAYAWADA: Experts at a seminar on ‘Computer vision and digital image processing', organized by the Computer Science Department of SRK Institute of Technology here on Tuesday, said that the field of computer vision and image processing would acquire even greater importance in almost all aspects and applications in the coming years.

      B.L. Deekshatulu, chairman of NIT Warangal and a visiting professor at the University of Hyderabad, said that a lot of research was going on in the field of image processing nowadays and the students would have immense opportunities if they chose this for their future projects.

      Image processing and computer vision had almost become fundamental to data acquisition as of now and there were indications of this gathering greater momentum in future.

     B. Chakravarthy, professor of computer science at the University of Hyderabad, said that advancements in image processing and computer vision were effecting drastic changes in the way security applications, forensic investigations, face identifications and other aspects were getting enhanced for greater effectiveness. Even minute aspects of image processing in various applications were being looked into and progress in this would lead to better results in fraud detection, authentication of genuine images and so on.

    B.S. Appa Rao, chairman of the SRK Institute of Technology, said that the students of professional courses should aim at acquiring the habit of conducting thorough research into every aspect under study .

Image forensics

The speakers also touched upon the changing direction of research into image processing to find out possibilities for highlighting and retrieving important data from various sources like the records of a surveillance camera. They said that image forensics was one field that would bring revolutionary changes in research.
